Indore gets called the food capital of Madhya Pradesh often enough that it is easy to forget the city also has some genuinely worthwhile historical and architectural spots. If you only have a day to explore, here is where most first-time visitors end up, and why.
Rajwada Palace, the seven-storey former residence of the Holkar rulers, sits right at the heart of the old city and is usually the natural starting point for a local sightseeing loop. From there, it is a short walk to the narrow lanes around the palace, which fill up with food stalls by evening.
Sarafa Bazaar deserves its reputation. By day it is a jewelry market; by around 9 PM, the same street transforms into one of India's better-known night food markets. If you are only doing one food stop in Indore, this is the one people will ask you about later.
56 Dukan is Indore's other major food street, a bit more organized than Sarafa and open through the evening rather than strictly late night, with a wider spread of both local and pan-Indian food stalls.
